In order to transition smoothly between sections it’s effective to have swells, eq automation, fx automation, short melodic ideas, reverse cymbals, side chained crash hits and some combination of all the above. The video below shows an example from the Twintapes track Synesthesia.
Transitions like these help the listener move along with the song, it indicates change. Think of foreshadowing in literature. Sometimes you want to warn the listener so that they can guess what’s coming and as a result they feel more involved with the music. Other times you want to surprise them. A balance of these two things can create a nice tension and release effect on your listener’s perspective.
